Which Lawnmower is right for me? When it comes to choosing a new lawnmower, you are spoilt for choice. Once you understand the different options and have decided what you do and don't need, the process becomes a lot less daunting.
Which Brand should I choose?
There are so many different brands to choose between. We have sold and serviced many of them over the years and have developed a pretty good understanding of what's good and what's not so good across the different brands. As such, we have streamlined our range of walk behind mowers to the Mountfield, Stiga, Kaaz and Atco brands. Across these brands we can offer option for everyone, along with quality, value and a brand we can trust.
Should I choose a Battery or Petrol Lawnmower?
Petrol Lawn mower
We offer a quality petrol lawnmower for every domestic need. All perform at the highest level – giving the power and cutting precision you need. In a time when reducing our carbon footprint is of the utmost importance, many people are swaying towards battery powered equipment. But this isn't for everyone. If you are considering buying a new petrol lawn mower but you are concerned about the environmental impact compared to the battery powered alternative, then Aspen fuel offers the perfect compromise. Battery Lawnmower
Our cordless equipment offers all the power of petrol without the environmental cost. Stiga battery lawn mowers are not only eco-friendly, but also quiet, convenient and low maintenance. Limited noise also means limited vibrations, allowing you to work on your garden in peace and comfort, without compromising on performance. There will be no more trips to the petrol station to fill a fuel can, and you can cut the grass in the knowledge that you are doing your little bit for the planet.
Rear Roller or 4 Wheels
Roller mowers have 2 wheels at the front and a roller at the back. They are a more forgiving alternative to the traditional cylinder lawnmower. Roller mowers are a popular choice for those wishing to achieve picture perfect stripes on their lawn. Roller mowers are best suited to fairly even, flat lawns. They don't take too kindly to wet and muddy conditions. Too much moisture can cause the chain and bearings to seize so it's important to keep them clean, dry and well lubricated. This will help to avoid unnecessary repair costs.
Four Wheeled Lawnmowers
A four wheeled mower is the most common choice. They offer the most versatility when it comes to cutting options, they are easy to manoeuvre and are better at handling rugged and damp ground.
Self-Propelled or Push
Mowing the lawn can be tiring, but a self-propelled mower will do much of the hard work for you. Simply holding the lower bar on the handlebars will engage drive to the rear wheels which will in turn propel the mower along. All you need to do is to guide the mower around your garden. This requires relatively little effort, saving you time and energy as there is no need for you to push the mower yourself.
A push or 'hand-propelled' mower does not have this option. You just push the mower yourself as you would a trolley or a pram.
Single or Variable speed.
Self-propelled lawnmowers are either single or variable speed. Variable speed mowers allow you to select a walking speed to suit your stride, whereas a single speed mower is set to one speed which would suit the average user.
Pull cord or Electric Start
All battery powered lawn mowers will feature the electric start function.
Most petrol lawnmowers start by pulling the cord which turns the flywheel to start the engine. This requires a certain amount of physical strength that not everybody has. A petrol lawnmower with electric start, eliminates the need for a pull cord, the engine will start easily at the push of a button.
Cutting Options
All of our mowers offer between 1 and 4 different cutting options.
Collection – You can collect your clippings in the grass collector. This is a great option for those who appreciate a tidy lawn and are happy to collect and dispose of their clippings.
Mulching – Mulching is my favourite option and is best suited to anyone who cuts their grass regularly and doesn’t let it get too long. If you are like me, then you’re likely to find mulching is your most convenient option and the healthiest for your lawn.
Rear Discharge – If your grass is a bit wild, then switching to the rear discharge function will enable you to plod through it with a fair amount of ease. The grass will leave the rear chute and deposit back onto the lawn. This isn’t the tidiest option, but it could be the most practical solution in order to bring your lawn under control.
Side Discharge – This option is much the same as the rear discharge function. Except that the grass leaves from the side of the mower rather than the back.
