Carburettor Issues

One of the biggest problems we face on a daily basis, is bad starting or running issues caused by stale or dirty petrol. Inside the carburettor are a series of jets (tiny holes) that control the flow of fuel into the engine. When these jets get blocked, fuel cannot flow freely, causing the engine to run badly or not start at all. As petrol deteriorates, it goes gunky and eventually becomes a jelly-like consistency (Why Petrol Goes Stale). This is a common reason why the jets in the carburettor can block. Aspen doesn't contain the chemicals which cause petrol to go stale. In fact, Aspen has a shelf life of more than 5 years! Another reason that jets get blocked, is dirt in the fuel system. Dirt can enter the fuel at any stage, whether it be on the garage forecourt, in your fuel can or by using a dirty funnel. Another common issue we see, is water in the fuel system. E10 Petrol contains 10% Ethanol. Ethanol attracts water from the atmosphere and that is how water can get into the carburettor. Water is heavier than petrol, so it sinks to the bottom and the petrol floats on the top. When this happens in the carburettor bowl, the engine can't run, because the water is stopping the fuel from getting through. Aspen contains 0% Ethanol, and so it doesn't attract any water at all.

Carbon Issues

Carbon is a by-product of the combustion process. Once the fuel has been combusted, the waste gases are expelled through the exhaust as fumes, often appearing grey or black in colour. This process also causes carbon build up inside the engine, which in time could cause engine problems. Due to the absence of carbon causing chemicals in Aspen fuel, carbon build-up is pretty much non-existent. On an annual service for a machine run on petrol you would expect to find the spark plug black with carbon and the oil to be dark and thick. But when run on Aspen, spark plugs are nice and clean the oil still golden.
